Dragon Speak and the Bitter Crop: America’s Failure to Fulfill Its Promise
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…” These timeless words from the Declaration of Independence embody the core ideal of American democracy. They assert that liberty and justice are not privileges granted by the government, but inherent rights endowed by our Creator.
Yet, the truth is jarring: America has never truly lived up to this noble creed. While the founding documents speak of freedom and equality, the nation’s history shouts of coercion, injustice, and bloodshed. For every inspired word etched into its charter, America has drafted law after law to deny the very freedoms it claimed to guarantee.
We must reckon with the contradictions. From the Missouri Compromise to Dred Scott v. Sandford, from Plessy v. Ferguson to the Jim Crow laws and today’s voter suppression measures, America has spoken with the voice of a lamb but acted with the fire of a dragon.
Government by Men, Not by God
Let’s be clear. The failure of America to fulfill its promise is not a failure of God—it is a failure of men. Just as ancient Israel turned from its calling and lost divine favor, so too has America strayed. Both were chosen, both given light, both squandered it.
Our leaders mock God—not in whispers but in declarations. They lead a nation that has embraced its sins and built monuments to its hypocrisies. And just as judgment fell upon Israel, it looms over us too.
Lincoln’s Reckoning
Abraham Lincoln, in his Second Inaugural Address, acknowledged the nation’s sin:
“Fondly do we hope—fervently do we pray—that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away. Yet, if God wills that it continue until all the wealth piled by the bondsman’s two hundred and fifty years of unrequited toil shall be sunk… so still it must be said ‘the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.’”
Lincoln understood that slavery was not just an economic system; it was a moral offense. And that offense— the fabricated myth of white superiority— did not end with the Emancipation Proclamation. It mutated, rebranded, and carried on.
The Lost Cause and the Spirit of the Dragon
The “Lost Cause” myth—a pseudo-historical narrative claiming the Confederacy was noble and not centered on slavery—was a smokescreen, gaslighting at its apex. It sanitized treason, glorified cruelty, and justified continued oppression. History rightly identifies it as a negationist ideology, meant to uphold white supremacy under the guise of honor and tradition.
Such lies have never gone away. They’ve just changed their wardrobe.
Dragon Speak in Modern America
Dragon speak is sanitized language masking violent realities. Consider the original police report describing the death of George Floyd:
“He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center by ambulance where he died a short time later. At no time were weapons of any type used…”
This clinical language might have been believed—had Darnella Frazier not recorded the truth. Her video was not just a witness account—it was a revelation. It shattered the illusion that America had progressed past its racist roots.
Strange Fruit Still Grows
Billie Holiday once sang:
“Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze… Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.”
Her words indict not just the lynch mobs but the White Sunday-go-to-church onlookers who smiled for photos beneath the charred corpses of Black American men and women. Those same spirits cheered George Floyd’s murder in silence. They stand today behind digital avatars, political doublespeak, and masked ICE agents.
This is not ancient history. This is our lived present.
The American Legacy: One Law, Two Applications
America’s legacy is double-sided justice. One law, two applications—split by color, class, and culture. That split is the wound that festers in every protest, every slogan, every tear.
The experiential divide between Black Americans and white America is not imaginary—it’s systemic. It’s spiritual. And it is recorded in the Books of Heaven, where dragon speak cannot hide.
Conclusion: A Nation at the Crossroads
America still claims to be a nation under God. But God is not mocked. The spirit of the dragon is loud in our policies, our politics, and our pulpits. Repentance is our only hope. Truth is our only path. Justice is our only redemption.
Until then, we remain a nation bearing strange and bitter fruit.
